National supply-chain shortage affecting your Thanksgiving dinner
Turkey farmers comment on the matter expressing concern
LANCASTER, Mass. (KYMA, KECY/CNN) - Here's one announcement your local grocery store may soon make over the intercom, "Attention Thanksgiving shoppers, we're all out of turkeys."
Supply-chain issues impacting turkey availability affects both farmers and consumers nationwide. Co-owner of Bob's Turkey Farm Susan Miner has already felt the impact. According to her, she's sold out.
"People were calling in August wanting to order their turkeys, and we would not even go live with our order system until September 27th," Miner shares. "And right away, I don't know- hundreds of turkeys coming in daily, orders."
She adds that a staffing shortage at her farm also limits turkey processing. As a result, Miner has had to turn down orders from customers who have been loyal to her for years.
"I sympathize for our customers because people that have been buying here for years and years and years are used to being able to call," she reveals.
Market-research firm Information Resources, Inc. (IRI) reports over 60% of turkeys nationwide are already out of stock. And the same goes for other Thanksgiving go-to's like:
- Cranberry sauce - 20% out of stock
- Sweet potatoes - 25% out of stock
- Yams - 25% out of stock
IRI confirms that the only dish that is in stock more than last year is stuffing.
