Weekly Rewind: Teen recovery, Border Patrol testimonies, decapitated body found in canal
All that, and of course, your coronavirus-related updates!
DESERT SOUTHWEST (KYMA, KECY) - News 11's Dominique Newland discovered a local athlete, whom at first glance, 17-year-old Rich Jaure appears to be your typical teen with a love for fitness.
But like the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. The Yuma native who currently ranks 89th in the world for his age division in CrossFit, was once told he may never walk or talk again.
On April 29, 2018, Rich was involved in a quad bike accident that would turn his world upside down.
Due to the severity of the crash, Rich had to be flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital immediately for a craniotomy where doctors made an incision from each side of his head.
With a strong support system and even stronger faith, Rich and his family are thankful to all be in good health and continuing their group love for fitness. Rich is now training to qualify for the CrossFit Games in July.
In another special report, CBS 13's Wiley Jawhary captured an inside look into the lives of Border Patrol agents.
The pandemic, along with the influx of migrants crossing into our country, have only made circumstances more difficult on agents. They are also subject to attacks from the other side of the border.
Jawhary spoke with Agents Carlos Pitones and John Mendoza, whom are both military veterans.
Mendoza tells us, those whom cross illegally find it strategic to go through back doors that lead into the Gran Plaza Outlets, where they quickly change clothes to confuse agents.
Agent Pitones says that he takes pride in knowing he’s still protecting his country, but whether in the military or along the border, sometimes serving comes with a price.
Furthermore, crime is going up in surrounding areas, something Border Patrol and local law enforcement are working to minimize. In addition to rock throwing, agents are also splashed with contaminated water from the New River.
Speaking of gross things and a river, this week, police found a dismembered body missing a head and severed hand!
Authorities attained a decapitated body floating in the Mesa Arenosa canal in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora.
Tribuna de San Luis reported residents of the Aviación 2 and Topahue colonies said the body was floating along the vicinity of the pedestrian bridge located at the height of San Emeterio Street.
Days later, officers found a person's head next to a cemetery. Police say the head was found inside a white, plastic bag, and believe it corresponds to the headless body previously mentioned.
The Attorney General's Office continued collecting evidence and transferred the human remains to the medical examiner's office to identify the body.
Based on the clothing, authorities believe the man whose torso was found, may have worked as a security guard.
