CDC says guidance has recently changed with the presence of more data

PHOENIX (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona state officials said any child as young as 12 years old could get a COVID vaccine while receiving other immunizations.

Dr. Cara Christ, director of the state Department of Health Services, said pediatricians could give children the Pfizer vaccine and other childhood vaccines needed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had previously recommended children wait two weeks in between vaccinations, but now, that has changed.

Dr. Christ said parents need to make sure children are caught up on childhood immunizations in general. Christ said she hopes the Pfizer vaccine will be approved for children ages 2-11 by September.

Health officials in Phoenix said they would be going door-to-door, educating residents about vaccines to encourage people to get vaccinated.

According to the state's coronavirus dashboard, roughly 3.2 million people, or 44.3% of Arizona’s eligible population, have received at least one dose.

Around 2.7 million are fully vaccinated.
