IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - While we’re hoping to see the light at the end of tunnel making our way back to normalcy, certain effects of the pandemic look to linger on for a bit longer.
“When employees lose their jobs by default they cannot pay their rent, even when they file for unemployment that’s not enough,” Esperanza Colio the Deputy Executive in Imperial said.
The state of California implemented a COVID rental relief program, the County of Imperial encouraging residents who need this help to come forward.
“And so this program the intent is to assist those individuals that either lost their jobs or the work hours were reduced," she said.
$13 million dollars, that’s the amount that’s been set aside for Imperial County residents who need help with paying their rent. Land lords and renters who’ve suffered financial hardships as a result of the pandemic may apply.
The program was launched in March and as of now, only 133 applications have been submitted. Now even if you didn’t lose your job during the pandemic but can still prove you suffered financial hardships you may qualify.
