ICE cancels Trump-era fines for undocumented immigrants
Fines allegedly did little to dissuade unauthorized entrants
IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA, KECY/CNN) - On Friday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tossed out a Trump administration policy introduced in 2018. The authority to impose such fines has been in the books for more than 20 years, but it was never enforced until three years ago.
President Trump's orders imposed fines of up to almost $800 a day on immigrants who ignored their deportation orders. For those who failed to leave the country voluntarily, the fine was $3K.
However, immigration agents now say the fines did little to persuade undocumented immigrants to leave. According to one ICE official, the government collected only one-percent of the fines it issued.
The agency says it will cancel all existing fines.
