Lettuce recall update: 2 cases reported in Arizona

Two cases in Arizona now recovered and released from hospital

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - The Arizona Department of Health services (ADHS) is now advising residents to dispose of romaine lettuce grown in Salinas, CA.

This is in response to a multi-state E. Coli outbreak.

If your lettuce is unlabeled, ADHS advises you should throw it away to be safe.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are currently investigating 40 cases of E. coli from 16 states, including two in Arizona.

ADHS says the two cases in Arizona were hospitalized, with one patient developing hemolytic uremic syndrome. Both have recovered have been released from the hospital. 

Symptoms include diarrhea and abdominal pain. Symptoms last from five to seven days. Young children and the elderly are most at risk to the illness.

“E. coli can cause serious illness, so it is critical that everyone take precautions and not consume any romaine lettuce that may be associated with this multi-state outbreak,” said Dr. Cara Christ, ADHS director.

“If you or someone from your family recently ate romaine lettuce and are experiencing symptoms, please seek medical treatment immediately.”
