Woman’s body found days after CA mudslides
(CNN) - In California, the body of a 62-year-old woman who was unaccounted for during a search in Forest Falls following a series of mudslides has been found.
Search and rescue teams sifted through a mound of mud inside the Forest Falls home for several days.
Upon inspection, the teams found 62-year-old Doris Jagiello.
An accomplished artist, published poet, and beloved grandmother was found dead underneath several feet of mud and debris.
“We were waiting for it and we didn't want it to happen. But we knew it was going to. When you have boulders the size of cars being moved, there's not much hope with that," Olin Richley, a mudslide victim, spoke.
A neighbor of Jagiello's, Richley says that she was a kind-hearted woman and he feels sympathy for her family.
Once the body was found, Jagiello's son hugged the team, thanking them for looking for his mom.
"Thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family," Richley expressed.
Neighboring family's bout with the mudslides
In addition, the same mudslide that killed Jagiello swept Richley's family's Jeep away and ripped a wall of their house.
"That's the worst of it. It took out the entire wall right there."
On the other side is Richley's room, which also had a wall caved in.
"If I would have been home at the time it would have seriously injured, if not killed me… so I’m counting my blessings."
The friends of Jagiello tell us they feel blessed to have known her, saying she was sensitive and happy.
Aftermath of the Jagiello's search
While searching for Jagiello, the search teams salvaged a few things for her family:
- One of her dogs, found alive two days after
- Several paintings
As Jagiello went missing on Monday during the rainstorm that led to mudslides that took her life, officials say they hope finding her will bring her family some closure.
