Dallas gym teacher named to be a part of the USA bobsled team
DALLAS, Tex. (NBC) - Imagine scooting down an icy track at 85 miles an hour.
Fortunately, a Dallas ISD teacher doesn't have to imagine it as he's recently been named to the USA National Bobsled Team.
The students at Annie Webb Blanton Elementary know Freddie Harris as Coach Harris.
The physical education teacher is teaching his pre-K through fifth grade students by example.
Two year dream
Harris has been, for the last two years, chasing a dream that recently became his reality.
The USA National Bobsled Team.
"I have a football background, but I'm past my football years. So, I was trying to figure out what else I could compete in."
Additionally, "I was like, 'How can I get to the Olympics?'"
Furthermore, "I seen a video on YouTube about bobsledding. I was like, 'Oh that looks like fun. Its just a rollercoaster on ice. I can do that you know like of thing.'"
Pusher
After just two years of training, he's competing at the elite level, training in Lake Placid.
His position is called a pusher.
"So, once you jump in you're just along for the ride...your heads down. You're sinking in. You're connecting with your guys, very personal I must say, and you just hold on for the ride."
Another key point, Harris traveled up to 85 miles an hour down an icy track.
Back to teaching
Later this month, Harris will be back to teaching.
"I miss my kiddos. I'm ready to get back to [th]em. So, as a teacher, what [you are] teaching these students [is] through your experience. I'm teaching them to pursue their dreams. If there's something you want to do that maybe no one else has done, then you could be that first person."
Following that, "Dreams are just dreams until you put them to actions and become reality."
Chasing dreams is a slippery slope to success.
