Yuma Police Department hosts first teen police academy

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Police Department (YPD) is currently hosting its first Teen Police Academy designed to educate teens about the daily operations of the department.

The Teen Police Academy is being held from Monday, July 10 to Thursday, July 13, along with a graduation on the last day.

The academy gives teens an opportunity to see how the police department operates and get some hands-on instruction on various topics relating to police work.

Classes at the academy include daily police procedures, building searches, decision-making scenarios, K9 demonstrations, Crime Scene Processing, Narcotics, Gangs, Animal Control, Driving Under the Influence, and Traffic Laws.

The teens were also able to tour the department.

The classes are held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the 15 participants are between 14 and 16 years old.

There is no fee for attending the academy.

The Yuma Police Department said it plans to do more academies in the future, so stay tuned to our website to see how you can get involved.
