City of Yuma Parks and Rec host Super Smash Bros. Tournament
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Parks and Recreation Department hosted week two of the Super Smash Bros. Tournament on Saturday.
This event is centered around children who enjoy playing video games during the hot summer months.
The tournament took place at the historic yuma theater at 1:00pm. There were 20 players who competed against each other.
The Marketing Specialist for the Yuma Parks and Rec, Eduardo Marquez, said this tournament is an expansion on their library of activities.
"This is really important because it's a way that the community comes together, and it's indoor. So now with the heat, and all that…And a lot of kids don't want to really go and play soccer. They're more of a playing video games type of dudes. So, we have that for them. We want to expand our library of activities, and this is our way of doing it," Marquez explained.
Before the tournament started, Marquez and his team called down each player to see which character they wanted to play. The winner of Saturday's games earned a free entry into next weekend's tournament and a Nintendo eShop gift card.
The overall winner of the four-week competition goes on to play at YumaCon in October.
