Congressman Paul Gosar hosts pro-life roundtable
Gosar is up for re-election on August 2nd, as he says he is happy the abortion issue is back in the hands of individual states
YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - Paul Gosar, who represents part of Yuma County in U.S. Congress, held a pro-life round table at a local church in Yuma.
Following the Supreme Court striking down Roe v. Wade, individual states now set the laws regarding abortion.
Representative Gosar says it’s a positive move for the country and state’s rights.
“This is not a federal issue, this is a state issue. We the people. The states gave the federal government limited powers and we have to take them back,” Gosar said.
Due to the Supreme Court decision, state-level representative Tim Dunn and his colleagues now control abortion law in Arizona.
He says next legislative session he expects a republican majority to advance pro life policies.
“God willing, with a republican majority next year, we’ll come in and continue to tweak what we need to do to continue a pro life stance for Arizona,” Dunn said.
Currently in arizona, abortion law remains unclear.
A 15-week ban on abortions was set to go into place before the Supreme Court decision.
But now Arizona’s attorney general is arguing a previous law from 1864 banning abortions takes precedent.
Representative Gosar says other important issues facing Yuma are border security and water rights.
“Yuma is ahead of the game, that’s what I love about Yuma. They’re thinking ahead, how do you come up with solutions for the problems we have. They don’t bellyache about it, they come up with ideas and listen,” Gosar said.
While gosar currently represents District 4, he’s running for re-election in District 9, which still includes Yuma county.
Early voting has already started, with the official primary day for Arizona being on August 2nd.
