Ahead of sentencing, Cardwell speaks for first time
Stepfather of murdered toddler breaks his silence - News 11's Arlette Yousif reports
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The former U.S. Marine found guilty of murdering his toddler stepdaughter spoke Friday morning for the first time since the beginning of his trial.
Jared Cardwell said he is still numb to the fact that he will never see his step-daughter again. He also said he knows that this is his time to "ultimately be responsible for everything," but asked for the chance to be with his loved ones again.
Sobbing could be heard from both ends of the courtroom. Cardwell's family pleaded for leniency on sentencing, while the victims family asks the judge to send Cardwell to prison for life.
The prosecution reminded the court the child had no way to defend herself against an adult, especially one who has military training.
Sentencing is set for April 30, 2021, at 10 a.m. KYMA.com, News 11, and CBS 13 will be in the courtroom to provide continuing coverage.
