SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - We have an update on the large group of undocumented immigrants that crossed illegally into the U.S. This happened Friday near Avenue F and County 24th Street in San Luis.
Yuma Sector Border Patrol confirmed at least 54 people from Mexico, ran into a neighborhood all scattered out. As of right now, only 25 have been apprehended.
This area, rather busy during the day, as many homes are still being built.
Home security footage caught a handful of undocumented immigrants running, evading border patrol.
“You see suspicious individuals we have the officers make contact to them to see what needs to be done.” Lt. Marco Santana said.
Oftentimes, during similar situations, the San Luis Police Department (SLPD) will assist border patrol in keeping residents protected.
“There were no injuries no situations that required any medical attention as far as our side of the police,” Santana added.
One construction worker we spoke to says he saw a few of them running into unfinished houses.
Gustavo Ruiz, another worker, saw agents looking for any activity.
“I said to my coworker the border patrol is in the area…going to get some people or a single person,“ Ruiz explained.
With many still not apprehended, the police department tells News 11 they will stay on top of this.
“We continue to maintain a close eye on the location. We also communicate the circumstances on Facebook. We let people know if you see anything suspicious let us know," Santana said.
A local mother told us she had trouble getting her child out of school Friday.
SLPD alerts local schools in the area but leaves it up to the school and district to decide if it’s urgent enough to lock the school down.
