CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA)- The El Centro Sector Border Patrol arrested a previously deported sex offender on Saturday evening.

Agents at the Calexico Station encountered the suspect after illegally crossing the border 12 miles east of Calexico's downtown Port of Entry.

The suspect was transported to the El Centro Station for screening.

Records revealed him to be Sergio Cruz-Cabrera, a 32-year-old Mexican national convicted of sexual assault in 2013 in Clark County, Washington.

Cruz served 30 months for his conviction, and was deported in 2015.

Cruz is currently held in federal custody pending further prosecution.

ECBP says Cruz is the eighth sex offender apprehended in the fiscal year 2020.
