The world is set to come together to be a champion for victims of sexual abuse

On April 27, the world will wear denim as part of denim day

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - According to the Somerton Domestic Violence Task Force, there is a victim of sexual assault in the United States of America every 68-second. More shockingly is that only 2% of offenders will be prosecuted for their crimes.

It's a heinous act, one that destroys, not only the body but the victim's very soul. The person they once were, eradicated by what can only be described as a monster.

It's for that very reason that the world comes together on April 27, to stand together to protect the vulnerable. Denim Day was established in the mid-1990s after an Italian court found that because the victim's jeans were too tight, the victim had to have helped her attacker making the act consensual.

The day after the ruling the women of the Italian Parliament walked the halls wearing jeans. And, since then the world has championed together to give victims hope.

In South Yuma County the Somerton Domestic Violence Task Force, Safe House, and other victim advocates will host its Denim Day on Friday, April 22 at 9 a,m, in front of the Somerton City Hall.

The group plans on walking from city hall east towards Veteran Memorial Park. There, they'll have a special presentation and informational booths.
