California dog owner warns others after dog ingests meth
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CNN, KYMA/KECY) - A dog owner in California is warning other pet owners to be careful at the local beach after her dog ingested drugs and became very sick.
The dog beach here at Ocean Beach is a staple in the community. However, one dog owner's trip to the beach ended at the emergency vet after her dog ingested drugs, and now, she's warning other pet owners.
The Ocean Beach dog beach is like Heaven for Kelly Wiehe, and her dog Lily. But their daily trip at the beach last week quickly turned into a nightmare.
While the four-year-old dog was running around like she does, she quickly ate something.
"There's a ton of, you know, leftover bits and pieces of picnics and things. But about an hour later, her behavior changed. She was avoiding me and avoiding being touched and her pupils were dilating and she wouldn't go outside and she wouldn't eat. She wasn't interested in drinking any water," Wiehe explained.
Test revelations
After several urine drug screenings at the emergency vet, Wiehe said she was told Lily tested positive for methamphetamine, marijuana and ritalin.
"I didn't know if I should laugh or cry or pass out because I was expecting, you know, maybe she'd eaten something spoiled or, you know, just, I don't know, I really was not expecting some to this level," Wiehe spoke.
Other dog owners at Ocean Beach are shocked.
"Who would leave meth on the beach knowing all these dogs are out here?" said one resident.
Multiple cases
And apparently, this isn't the only time something like this has happened. Wiehe says the vet told her there have been multiple cases of dogs ingesting meth at Ocean Beach.
The clinic that treated Lily could not reveal the exact number of similar cases right away.
When anyone looks at Lily now, they would never know she has been sick for days, which is why after this, Wiehe is soaking up every second they have together.
"Just realizing how temporary our relationships with our animals really are," Wiehe remarked.
