Man involved in Yuma bank holdups may not be competent for trial
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The man accused of robbing two banks in two weeks March of last year will be undergoing a mental competency evaluation after appearing in court today.
The test will determine if 37-year-old Ivan Soqui is mentally competent enough to stand trial.
Police say Soqui went to two different Chase banks in two weeks, each time handing the teller a note saying he was armed and demanded cash.
Although, police note, he never actually showed a gun.
Soqui has had an interesting journey in court.
Initially stating he was homeless, Soqui was unable to post bail and is still in custody.
For a time he asked not to have represenation.
He is, at the moment, facing two felonies, second degree burglary and criminal trespassing.
Although that may change if Soqui is deemed not mentally fit enough to stand trial or comprehend the charges.
Court convenes again for Soqui on January 19.
