Threat of another nationwide rail strike renewed after new deal is rejected
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - The chance of a nationwide railway strike just got higher, after a new move by a maintenance workers' union.
On Monday, union members voted against a proposed five-year contract and says it will now try to hammer out a new deal with the nation's top freight railway managers.
But if there's no deal by November 19th, the workers could go on strike.
The contract that the union rejected was reached after marathon negotiations last month, which included direct intervention by President Joe Biden.
The White House is trying to avoid a freight railway strike, because it would put extra pressure on already strained supply chains.
Two other railway unions are still voting on last month's deal - but even if they vote "yes", their members could not come back to work without the maintenance workers.
