Senator Kyrsten Sinema discusses new bipartisan gun safety reform bill

The bill's potential passing has support on both sides of the debate, and could potentially offer new action following a wave of mass shootings - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The recent wave of mass shootings has left many demanding action.

Now, a group of senators is coming together to make it happen.

A day after the tragic shooing in Uvalde, Texas, Senator Kyrsten Sinema got together with three other senators to discuss the issue.

The group now has over 20 senators, and bipartisan support.

“I refuse to let Washington politics stop progress. I know that our plan will save lives,” Sinema said.

This week the group, also including Senator Mark Kelly, laid out a plan for new action on gun control.

Bringing together both democrats and republicans on an issue the two have disagreed on for so long.

“It’s really been a question of us having the opportunity to talk with our colleagues and hear from them about the concerns that they’re hearing from their constituents,” Sinema said.

One of the groups main points is to conduct further background checks on buyers under 21.

They can currently purchase assault rifles at 18 years old in some states, including Arizona.

The group is asking for an investigative period to check mental health records, along with checking state databases, and with local law enforcement.

“so we agreed very early on that we wanted to address the phenomenon of young people who aren’t getting the mental health resources that they need,” Sinema said.

Sinema tells us she fully expects the bill containing these changes to pass…

When it’s introduced to the senate next week.
