One million people have signed up for Affordable Care in 2021
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - The Biden Administration says one million people have signed up for health insurance on the federal government's exchange during a special enrollment period.
A new sign-up period for plans covered under the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, were opened in February.
Normally, only people experiencing life changes like divorce or job loss are allowed to sign up outside the annual open enrollment period but the Biden Administration opened it up for special enrollment as part of its response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 14 states that operate their own exchanges and Washington D.C. also offered enrollment outside of the normal period.
Under Biden's Covid relief plan, monthly premiums are reduced by as much as more than 40% for some people.
The special enrollment period is open until August 15th on the federal exchange.
