IBM creates world’s smallest microchip
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - On Thursday, IBM introduced a 2-nanometer chip which the company says is the world's smallest and most powerful chip.
The chip is about the size of a fingernail and contains 50 billion transistors. Each of those are about the size of two strands of DNA.
This chip is also a major step in chip technology. It has a 45% higher performance and uses 75% less energy than most 7-nanometer chips.
Experts say IBM's new microchip will lead to advances in areas like artificial intelligence and encryption. The chips are expected to go into production as early as 2024 which won't be soon enough to make a dent in the current global chip shortage.
