California doctor receives wrong second dose of Covid vaccine
(KYMA, KECY/NBC News) - A California woman says she was mistakenly giving the wrong vaccine for her second dose. She was suppose to get the Pfizer vaccine but she instead received Moderna.
Dr. Veena Thomas has a PHD in Pharmaceutical Sciences and is CEO of her own chemical drug consulting firm, but when she went to the hospital for her second Pfizer vaccine dose, she was just another patient.
Thomas said as soon as she got it, she chatted with her nurses and they told her she was flagged for the Moderna vaccine.
Thomas said she probably had had the same minor side effects as everyone else and she doesn't think this incident should make anyone afraid of getting a vaccine in the future.
Experts, like Dr. Peter Chin Hong, say they do not think getting two doses from different manufacturers is an immediate health risk.
"It doesn t present much of a health risk," said Chin Hong. "In fact, I would say that that person is likely going to have the same benefits from the vaccines as someone who got two of the same kind."
The hospital says of the 31,000 vaccines administered, this is the only occurrence they are aware of, but they will review already strict protocols.
