Farmers to Families food boxes available in Yuma
Program part of multi-billion dollar relief program for farmers and those in need
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Community Food Bank is handing out food boxes provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farmers to Families program.
The USDA is set to spend approximately $3 Billion assisting farmers and ranchers affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The food will in turn be given to non-profits across the country.
The boxes are packed with high-demand items like milk, cheese, salad, fruits and vegetables. The food comes during a tough period for many food banks and pantries, since summers are especially difficult due to a decrease in food donations. President and CEO of the Yuma Community Food Bank Shara Whitehead tells us how this helps Yuma County. "So this program actually came at a wonderful time, because we're receiving top shelf produce products and it'll go through the summer. So that is unusual and we're very grateful," Whitehead said.
Whitehead tells us that the Farmers to Families program should continue until the end of the year. If you're interested in a box just head to the Yuma Community Food Bank. You must show a state ID and have a utility bill or rent receipt on hand. If you have any questions call (928)343-1243 or go to https://www.yumafoodbank.org/
