Locals give their opinion over the Confederacy controversy
We asked locals what they thought about recent news of bans and removals of relics associated with the Confederacy
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - In the mid-1800's the Arizona Territory was dubbed 'Confederate Arizona' and to this day relics of the Confederacy are on display. But, the question on many American's minds is whether or not keep them? Across the country communities are moving to remove statues that pay tribute to the men and women that died fighting for the Confederacy.
In an effort to gauge local opinion we took to the streets and asked passer by's what they thought of removing Civil War monuments that recognized the Confederacy.
One young woman said "It helps, some of the monuments are not good for what's going on right now".
Another young lady felt otherwise and said "I don't agree with that at all, I think honestly that's the history of our country". We spoke to one gentleman who answered with "Well with all the turmoil that's going on in the country, take them down" another young man was neutral telling us "everyone has a right to their own opinion you know, I feel if they're removed then their removed for a reason". Another young woman expressed genuine sadness, telling us about the country's history she said "I don't like it because it's part of our history, I understand both sides but it's a part of our history" and lastly a young man agreed telling us "I feel as though, it's part of our history and we should keep them".
Opinions were split between learning about American history and the climate of current affairs and their ties to historic influences.
