Local school holds promotion drive-thru for kindergarteners

Sunrise Elementary holds promotions drive-thru for students

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Whether it's a graduation or promotion, a student's next step in their academic career is a big deal. So, teachers and parents are doing their best to make the event a memorable one. One of the most convenient, and safest ways is by doing a drive-thru which complies with the Center for Disease Control's recommended 'Social Distancing' practice.

Thursday morning, teachers and staff all gathered in front of Sunrise Elementary in Yuma's east county. Some wore costumes. Others held home-made signs with messages like "congratulations" and "we miss you." Teachers cheered as parents drove by with their Kindergarten class of 2020.

When asked why they decided to hold the event principal Suzzette Whelchel said "Because we love our kids, we miss our kids, we want them to know that we care about them, um we've been working with them all during this thing. We've been virtually working with them and we just want them to know that we love them".
