YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY)-Each year, a day is set aside to honor the men and women around the country who have passed away in the line of duty.

The Yuma Police Department says due to the pandemic the Peace Officer Memorial Service has been cancelled this year due to the “social distancing” recommendation.

However, the Fraternal Order of Police Yuma Lodge #24 (FOP) President Eric Egan says:

“It is our duty to honor and remember our 34 fallen officers from the
Yuma area communities. Making the decision to cancel our event
was not taken lightly. The community rallied to help us build a new-fallen officer monument over the past few years, and the build project has been
completed. This would have been the first memorial service in front
of the new monument.”

President Egan will be holding a condensed memorial service at the monument, via Facebook Live on May 15th at 7 pm. You will be able to watch it on their Yuma FOP Monument Project Facebook page.

The FOP Yuma Lodge is planning on holding a dedication ceremony
in the fall to recognize the supporters of the fallen officer monument
project.
