How COVID-19 impacts NAF El Centro

Chris Heal

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Naval Air Facility in El Centro has also had to adjust to California's stay at home order. Gianella Ghiglino has more

Earlier this year the Naval Air Facility (NAF) in El Centro announced the cancellation of the airshow due to the threat of COVID-19.

Even though NAF is still functioning, life on base has changed.

“What’s unique about COVID-19 is we had to implement this new physical distancing from everybody like that but we have been able to modify our stance and our patrons, and our families here on base protected,” said Kristopher Haugh, Public affairs offer for (NAF) El Centro.

Haugh says life on base is pretty much a reflection of what California is doing. They are also doing routine health screenings.

“We’re not going as far as the temperature screenings but we have a screening process just to check on everyone as their coming through.”

Haugh also says that they have seen a decrease in pilots coming in to train.

“Umm, you know about the umm military travel restrictions right now. Plus the training is still happening aircrafters are just not coming to us right now.”

On April 20th the Department of Defense set a travel ban that prohibits DOD service members and civilian personnel from traveling domestic and oversees.

The memo is in effect until June 30, though that could change because reviews are taking place every 15 days based on CDC guidance.

Gianella Ghiglino

Peruvian-born and LA raised Gianella Ghiglino joins the team from the San Fernando valley. “LA is the place that taught me how to breath and Peru is my breath.” She says she was inspired by the community she grew up in and began documenting her experience through poetry at the age of 7. “I wrote about everything I saw, felt and everything that inspired me.” When she entered High School she joined her school news station and realized that broadcast journalism allowed her to pursue her passion and her purpose all at once. Gianella attended Cal State Northridge and received a Bachelors degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in Spanish Broadcast Journalism, and Political Science. She did several internships while in College but most notably interned for PBS’s local LA station for three years. “My purpose is to share my story and of those in my community, my passion is writing.”
