Students cash in on college awareness night
Local event aims to help students get to college
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY). It's a fact of life; surviving in the work force depends on the tools at your disposal and an education is always the tool of choice. So, the question on most students minds is "how do I get there?"; the answer is simple, secondary education.
The path to acquiring the skills you seek takes commitment and sacrifice and of course money. For many student loans seem to be the easiest way to go; but is it.
According to Debt.org in 2016, the average amount borrowed was $37, 172. Payments usually start after the student received their degree at about $382 a month for a period of 10 years. This is due regardless if the student has a job.
This is where organizations like the Arizona Community Foundation of Yuma come into play. ACF takes donations from donors and disburses them throughout Yuma County to agencies and students in need. Since its inception in 1993 it's given more than $7.9 million in scholarships and grants.
On Tuesday January 28, 2020, at 5 p.m., the ACF will be hosting its annual 'Cash for College' Awareness Night at the Yuma Art Center located in Downtown Yuma. The event will feature 25 agencies offering scholarships to local students. Students, their families and educators are all invited to attend the the event.
