Crane School District awarded grant to fund school counselor positions

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A highly-competitive grant was just awarded to Crane Elementary Schools in Yuma.

The schools affected are:

  • Gary A. Knox
  • Pueblo Elementary
  • Salida Del Sol

The grant will provide three dedicated school counselors for each school for the next three school years.

In total, the grant equals $399,600.

On Friday, December 13, the Arizona State Board of Education approved the schools as a recipients of the 2020 School Safety Program Expansion program.

The highly competitive, rigorous grant cycle saw over 900 applicants, and these three Crane schools in Yuma made the cut.

"We are extremely excited," says Principal Laura Hurt of Gary A. Knox.

"School counselors are vitally important to the education team. We know that when one’s social/emotional development is sound; student success goes up so it’s a win-win for our students in all areas.”
