EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KSWT, T3) - The El Centro Post Office said repairs are underway for several community mailboxes that have been broken into in the last week.

The tampered mailboxes are located in different parts of the city.

Three out of the five mailboxes at Date Garden Mobile Home Park have been broken. Residents now have to pick up their mail at the post office until the boxes are repaired.

It’s an inconvenience, residents aren’t too happy about it.

“They broke into them over the weekend and I tried fixing one, but there’s not much else I can do,” said German Gonzalez, Date Garden Mobile Home Park employee.

“It’s sad, especially now in the holidays they’re looking for things to steal. People are sending gifts, gift cards and that’s what they’re looking for,” said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez reported the incident with the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the post office, it cost about $1,300 to replace a mailbox, but replacing one can take some time.
