Residents in SLRC say they’ve never witnessed so much violence

YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KSWT, KECY).

With the holiday season in full swing and thousands of residents traveling in and around the country, including just on the other side of the border, travelers are being more alert following a recent string of murders in San Luis, Mexico.

Residents in San Luis, Arizona say they have never seen so much violence taking place in a place they call home.

Just this week two officers in San Luis, Mexico were fatally gunned down, adding to the list of other murders that have happened in the small border town this year.

Governor Doug Ducey (R-AZ) spoke about the violence when he was in Yuma Thursday, saying that he's working with leaders on the other side of the border to make sure the violence doesn't affect those in the U.S.

The tragedy of the two policemen shot and killed hit close to home for one father whose son is also an officer in Mexico. He asked News 11 to not release his name due to fear.

“As soon as I see him walk out the door - I always think that maybe the last time I see him," said the father.

However, the action is being done on both sides of the border. Both the government of Mexico and Sonora are stepping up to ensure the safety of both communities. Recently, Arizona Gov.

“We ask everyone to see the advisories so they can be as safe as possible,” said Gov. Ducey in his recent visit to Yuma.

The Gov. tells News 11 that communication between the two governments is key and crucial, he said he will continue meeting with all levels of law enforcement and the government to try and put an end to the murders happening in San Luis, Mexico.

“To stop the drug cartels, human trafficking, and child sex trafficking and we will continue our communication with the Sonoran Government," said Gov. Ducey.
