Routine storm drain sweep reveals illicit passageway

TUCSON, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - U.S. Border Patrol agents and Mexican Federal Police discovered an incomplete cross-border tunnel in Nogales on Wednesday.

The tunnel was found during a routine sweep of the storm drain system that serves both Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Mexico.

Agents say the entrance was concealed in the floor of an exiting drainage system. It was capped with Styrofoam and concrete mix. At its entrance it was about three-feet wide and more than four-feet tall. The tunnel extended 20-feet into the U.S.

Border Patrol and Mexican police will secure the tunnel, then fill it with concrete.

This is the 124th illicit drug tunnel agents have discovered in the Tucson Sector since 1990.
