YUHSD chess players advance to state finals

Five students representing Yuma County out of 64 state-wide

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - Five students from the Yuma Union High School District are heading to the Arizona state finals for chess.

Kofa High won the regional team championship this year, sending Cristian Gutierrez and Juan Ruan to the state finals.

Angel Monroy will compete in the finals, representing San Luis High.

Luis Flores and Daniel Lopez-Gonzales will represent Yuma High, with Jesus Lopez-Gonzales participating as an alternate.

The event takes place at the Yuma Catholic High School gym, featuring 64 chess players from across Arizona.

Three rounds took place today and the final rounds will be played tomorrow, November 23, at 9 a.m.

Awards will take place at 5 p.m. after the final rounds.
