Caregiver sentenced for defrauding elderly victim

A woman who served as a caregiver was sentenced on Wednesday to 30 months in prison for defrauding a 92-year-old elderly woman.

The District of Arizona said Margaret Gastelum and her daughter, Mona Lisa Rodriguez, had provided home care assistance for the 92-year-old victim. Gastelum admitted to the both of them gaining access to the victim’s banking information and fraudulently used funds from the bank accounts.

Gastelum and Rodriguez also used the victim’s credit cards, and overcharged their care services without knowledge from the victim.

Rodriguez had entered a guilty plea for her involvement, and is scheduled for sentencing on September 24 according to the District of Arizona.

Gastelum was ordered by the court to pay $184,648 in restitution for the victim’s losses.
