Replacement wall construction underway in San Luis

Crews are working on the 14-mile stretch of the new border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in Yuma county.

It was a campaign promise made by president trump, now becoming a reality.

Agents said the new wall will help them see any threat on the other side of the border.

” It comes with a reinforced concrete footer, which prevents people from digging underneath and compromising the fence and also the fact that it is so tall that 99.9 percent of the people that we’re currently seeing, the demographic we’re currently seeing, will not even attempt to climb over, ” said Agent Jose Garibay .

The Yuma Sector said it is has been consistently putting in requests for a replacement wall because the fence is outdated.

Agents said it is made up of landing mats used during the Vietnam War.

The replacement wall is being constructed by Barnard Construction Company with a $172 million price tag, according to Customs and Border Protection.

CBP said in November 2018, when the contract was awarded, that the total contract value is about $324 million.

Construction began around May and is set to continue for the rest of the calendar year, according to Border Patrol agents.
