$4 million drug bust in Yuma under investigation

Fifty-one-year-old Alejandro Escobar Rivera has been formally charged with transporting a dangerous drug and narcotics for sale, possession of drug paraphernalia, and another count of possession of drug paraphernalia involving meth.

This after the Yuma County Sheriff’s deputies said they pulled over Rivera, on July 18, for allegedly speeding in a furniture delivery truck on Avenue B and 24th Street.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Rivera was supposed to be delivering furniture on behalf of Somerton’s Alex Furniture.

Instead, he was found with more than 220 pounds of meth, five pounds of cocaine, and multiple cell phones.

News 11 went to Alex Furniture to speak to the owner, who chose not to talk on-camera but denied Rivera’s connection to his store.

However, while investigating, Homeland Security Investigation ( HSI ) and Yuma County Narcotics Task Force detectives also arrested another employee on immigration violations.

The owner also denied any ties to that employee.

HSI confirmed the investigation is still active and ongoing

Meanwhile, Rivera is being held on a $200,000 bond and is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on July 29.
