New law helps school kids with asthma
Local agencies and state officials announced on Tuesday new law that helps kids with asthma.
California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed new law to help students with asthma after parents complained their kids were not allowed to take their meds or inhalers on campus.
El Centro resident Claudia Morales said, ” My son, during this past school year, I received several phone calls, telling me, mom, I can’t breathe. I knew that every moment was counting, every second. ”
She said it was because they had received medical care for his asthma south of the border.
Esther Bejarano, Comite Civico del Valle, said her organization took this issue to state officials, and they listened.
” This is a crisis happening in our community for our students in imperial county. A silent crisis, ” Bejarano said.
Assembly Bill 743 was signed on July 12. It will make it possible for kids to receive school help with their asthma medication if they have received medical care from a state-approved binational health plan in Mexico.
Assembly Member Eduardo Garcia, California 46 th District, said, ” The testimonies from many, many parents that there is a law in place that is in the way of ensuring that children have access to their medication, to be able to breathe, it made no sense to us. It made no sense to us. And it made all the sense in the world to team up with state Senator Hueso and introduce this piece of legislation. ”
Senator Ben Hueso, California 40 th District, said, “Law like this makes a lot of sense, that if you have people that are part of an actual medical plan that are going to Mexico and getting prescription drugs there that they’re able to use them here.”
The new law becomes effective in January.
” Kids will be able to breathe. Kids will be able to study and learn and thrive in school, ” Bejarano said.
