Stolen car leads police on chase and ends with no arrests made

Authorities are still on the lookout for two suspects they said led them on a high-speed pursuit and allegedly hit two cars in the process.

El Centro police said the pursuit began in the area near Scott Avenue and Imperial Avenue on Monday.

Authorities initiated a felony stop on a Honda Civic that police said was stolen. As officers approached the vehicle, the driver sped off.

Commander Aaron Reel, of the El Centro Police Department, said about the driver in the stolen vehicle, ” Pulled over to the side of the road. indicating that it was going to comply with the directions of the officer. However, shortly into that attempt, the vehicle sped away from the stop. And led officers on a pursuit. ”

El Centro resident, Alicia Hawley who lives in the neighboorhood , where the chase began said it’s usually a peaceful area.

Hawley said, ” We never hear nothing . And this neighborhood is quiet. Never happen like things like you say right now. ”

Authorities said the driver in the stolen vehicle was traveling at speeds of up to 70 MPH in city and county roads, endangering the lives of other drivers.

Commander Reel said, ” It failed to comply with traffic laws, it rammed a couple of vehicles during the course of the pursuit. Passing people on the right. Going through intersections at a high rate of speed. And one was even through a school area as it went outside of the town. ”

Commander Reel said police called off the pursuit just before the vehicle reached the city of Calexico , to avoid putting more lives at risk.

” Driver’s already proven the capacity that it’s willing to hit somebody else. Pose an additional danger to the public. And ultimately it’s a stolen vehicle. The risk posed to the public as it went to the city of Calexico was entirely too high for officers to continue that pursuit, ” Commander Reel said.

Calexico police later found the vehicle abandoned but the two suspects are still at large. Law enforcement described the driver as a Hispanic male adult and the passenger as a Hispanic male juvenile.

Police said the driver is facing serious charges.

Commander Reel added, ” A felony, evading, assault with a deadly weapon. Possession of stolen property. ”

The El Centro Police Department said anyone with any information regarding the suspect in the pursuit is encouraged to call the authorities.
