Mexicali animal protection non-profit rescues abused dog
A Mexicali animal protection non-profit association helped rescue a mixed-breed dog Tuesday who had been allegedly tortured by its owner for more than three months.
Following complaints from neighbors on social media, the dog was found with injuries to the face, anus, and had vision damage. A video, that was posted on Facebook by neighbors, showed the dog that could be heard crying while its owner was with it in the backyard.
Neighbors reported the incident to Mexican authorities. Currently, in Mexico, animal cruelty is not considered a serious offense. However, if found guilty, one could face a penalty of up to two years for whoever is responsible.
Authorities have not detained anyone related to this case.
The dog, who was taken to a veterinary to be examined, was named “Canela” at the clinic since it had no name.
According to neighbors’ testimonies, the attacker has another dog, who is a German Shepard, inside the home who has allegedly also suffered from abuse. Members of the animal protection non-profit, “Patitas Callejeras”, have demanded authorities to help rescue the other dog from the home.
