Women Haven honors domestic violence victims
In honor of national crime victims’ rights week, Women Haven in El centro, held a special ceremony.
The organization held a lighting ceremony, honoring those lost to domestic violence.
Special speakers in attendance discussed the importance of bringing awareness about domestic violence and different types of abuse woman struggle with.
Woman Haven executive director, Gina Vargas, expressed the importance of learning from past mistakes and helping woman move forward.
“Two-hundred and fifty individuals come through our door each year.” “We first started as an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence, when home is no longer safe,” said Gina Vargas, Woman Haven, executive director.
The organization provides a variety of services for women, including legal help, housing assistance, counseling services and other programs focused on helping women get back on their feet.
The national coalition against domestic violence says one in three woman in the U.S., experience a form of physical violence from a partner.
“This community event helps at least one person today.” “If you know someone who is going through something like that, tell them there’s nothing to be ashamed of.” “That they did nothing wrong,” said Vargas.
Vargas advises anyone dealing with domestic violence to contact Woman Haven for help.
