Air Force to test water after contamination found at base

The U.S. Air Force will test water in the Phoenix area after finding contamination in a base’s surface and groundwater.

The Arizona Republic reports a 2017 site inspection of Luke Air Force Base in Glendale revealed that an elevated level of chemicals found in a firefighting foam had seeped into the base’s water.

The Air Force says it will begin requesting permission Wednesday to test about 45 wells in the area surrounding the base, including in Glendale, Goodyear and parts of Maricopa County.

The Air Force says it does not know if the water around the base is contaminated or how far the toxic substances could have spread.

Brig. Gen. Todd Canterbury says the base will continue to aggressively investigate the matter.
