Journalists rally in support of slain Mexican journalist
Since 2000 more than two-hundred journalists have been killed across Mexico and 99 percent of those cases are not solved, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. That’s why several Mexican journalists took the streets of San Luis, Rio Colorado demanding justice for Santiago Barroso, a 47-year-old radio journalist who was shot and killed in front of his home.
Barroso has been the fourth journalist killed since Mexican President, Manuel Lopez Obrador took office in December.
“Santiago was always professional, an excellent journalist. This murder hurts us all as people and as professionals, he carried so much passion for journalism,” said Dier Hernandez, a long-time friend of Barroso.
More than 50 Mexican journalists walked in solidarity holding signs that read ‘Truth should not be killed’ and ‘Justice for Barroso.’
“Authorities who are in this case need to get to the bottom of this and what happened, this tragedy, for the community, for us journalists, for those who are watching on a national and international level,” said Hernandez.
He also said that no one should be killed for doing their job and that the Mexican federal government should take action.
“We hope that there is more demand on freedom of speech for us so we can do our job as a journalist on the daily and we need more action from the federals,” said Hernandez.
At this moment the Mexican authorities in San Luis, Mexico are still investigating his murder, they are still not sure if this was a personal or professional attack or that it’s linked to organized crime.
