YCSO warns public of recent computer scam
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of recent reports of a computer scam.
Sheriff officials said victims have been receiving calls from a suspect advising them that there is a problem with their computer and need access. Once access is granted, the suspect informs the victim they have transferred money into an account and needs the money back. The suspect tells the victim to purchase Google play cards and call them back with the card numbers.
Authorities have also received previous reports of the following scams:
Grandparent scam: Victims receive a phone call of someone posing as a grandchild who is either allegedly out of town, locked in jail, have had a car accident or are in need of medical treatment. The suspect will ask for money to be wired to them.
Jury duty scam: Victims receive a call from someone at the courthouse who alleges that the victim failed to report to jury duty and claim a warrant is out for their arrest. The suspect offers the choice to either pay for the warrant or an officer will be sent to arrest them.
Lottery scam: This scam claims the victim has won money in a foreign lottery with the call coming from someone who sounds official. The suspect will ask for a payment up-front for supposed taxes and fees so the victim can collect their winnings.
Utility scam: Victims receive a call attempting to convince them that the utility company will soon cut off service due to unpaid bills. The suspects ask for money sent to them by money transfer or a prepaid card.
If you suspect you may have been a victim, YCSO asks the community to please contact the authorities.
