First-ever flight out of Yuma to Dallas celebrated Monday
The Yuma International Airport held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday morning in honor of the first-ever flight out of Yuma to Dallas, Texas.
About 80 passengers waited in line with excitement to take off in the first commercial flight from Yuma to Texas. Several said it’ll be faster for them to get to their final destination now.
Community leaders and the Yuma Fire Department were present at the ceremony. The fire department did a water salute in honor of the grand take off as passengers boarded the American Airlines flight.
Airport Director, Gladys Brown, said that although getting this new flight took several years, the smiles on passengers faces was all worth it like one frequent flyer, Carroll Madrid.
“I wasn’t expecting for the Fort-Worth to pass. We pitched it a couple of times for the fact they’re are traveling over Phoenix. This opens up more direct flights versus them connecting down to the Southern region or them connecting in the Midwest and heading South,” said Brown.
“Normally I go from Yuma to Phoenix, to Phoenix to Charlotte and Charlotte to Fort Myers. Now, it’s just Yuma, to Dallas to Fort Myers,” said Madrid.
The flight from Yuma to Dallas lasts about two hours and a half. Brown said this connecting flight gives more options to those flying out of Yuma as well as those coming into Yuma.
