City of Yuma researching potential purchase of Far West Water

Far West Water and Sewer customers could possibly welcome a new water provider.

The City of Yuma has been in talks with Far West to purchase the company for months, according to Yuma County Supervisor Darren Simmons.

“Right now they’re in talks with the city to hopefully have the city buy them out. I know they’ve got some bonds coming due. so the city’s been in talks with them for a while to procure it,” explained Simmons.

The City of Yuma confirmed they have been researching the possibility of purchasing the company if the Mesa del Sol annexation becomes a reality.

News 11 spoke to several residents who are serviced by Far West and had mixed reactions about a potential sale.

“To tell you the truth, I’d give my right leg to see Far West go out of business,” said Ted Mittendorf, a Far West customer. “They’ve never done what they’re supposed to do. They raised the water rate up three or four years ago. They never did one single thing they said they’d do.”

Another said the price change may be a good change.

“I think it would be a lot different, or make a difference on the regular monthly bill,” said Marisol Castro.

Some claimed it may be a good thing when it comes to the odor issue that residents have complained to Supervisor Simmons about in the past.
