Long-lasting impacts of the government shutdown in Yuma
President Donald Trump’s announcement to open the federal government until February 15th has left a long-lasting impact in the Yuma community.
“The county was impacted heavily on the services with health or the apartment complexes that we have that are subsidize through HUD or any other services that are federally funded,” said Tony Reyes, the Chairman of Board of Supervisors.
Reyes said that if the government were to shut down again, those who rely on food stamps could be the most affected.
“Most of the outcomes are not going to be satisfactory, there are going to be difficult, people will be losing services that they count on like health services and living arrangements that people count on,” said Reyes.
One of those non-profit organizations that will be affected is Comite de Bienestar that offers housing development to low-income residents, but because of the program is financed through USDA those awaiting homes are still on hold.
“I have five houses that were finished but have not been delivered because USDA finances it,” said Reyes.
