City reviews council member applications under community concerns
Thirteen applications are being reviewed by the City of Calexico to fill the empty council member seat left vacant when a member left to become county supervisor.
The city is going ahead with their plan to select a new member through a process that some have said is unfair. They have accused the city of follow using favoritism and not being democratic.
Council Member Bill Hodge had said he had initially opposed the process as well. He said after speaking further with the other council members, he has no choice but to go ahead and side with them. He said the process is more practical than having to call a special election which would cost the city thousands of dollars.
A committee made up of two council members, the city manager and the assistant city manager will review the applications and select the top three. They will present they present those candidates in a special meeting on February 11 th . The city council will then publicly select their choice for new council member.
