Arizona saw a 41% increase in medical marijuana use in 2018

Medical marijuana purchases and use is doubling in Arizona and it’s at a faster rate than the number of people allowed to legally use it.

Newly released numbers from the Arizona Department of Health Services annual end-of-the-year report shows Arizonans consumed, smoked, or vaped nearly 60 tons of marijuana in 2018.

The number is a 41 percent increase over 2017 sales, according to state health officials.

Medical marijuana patients grew less than 20 percent, to more than 186,000. There were only about 40,000 patients in 2012.

The 2010 Arizona Medical Marijuana Act allows qualified patients to have up to 2.5 ounces at a time and buy the same amount every two weeks.

Arizona has about 130 dispensaries across the state.
