Local police remembers fallen officers on National Law Enforcement Day

Local police remember on this National Law Enforcement Day two officers who fell in the line of duty on this national law enforcement appreciation day.

For that reason, former DEA Officer Enrique “Kiki” Camarena has a special place in a department memorial and the hearts of Calexico police.

Dispatcher Leo Miramon said, “I remember, I was part of this department as a police explorer back when that occurred.”

Camarena died in the fight against drugs in Mexico.

Officer Adrian C. Cordova is also part of that memorial – unfortunately.

Calexico Police Detective Armando Orozco said, “He was coming back from a training exercise in preparation to an event that was going to happen here.”

Cordova never made it home.

“I recall that officer Cordova was killed in a traffic accident. The dispatchers that were working that day, as myself, weren’t able to conduct the job that they usually do because of the heartbreak and the incident was just real tragic,” Miramon said.

Cordova had served for barely three years. He was 26 years old.

“it was like a family member that we lost. I remember it was pretty tough at the time,” Miramon said.

Officers face dangers on a daily basis.

“It’s just something the officers have to live with something to go through, and they know the risks and the dangers they have to go through on a daily basis,” Miramon said.

The public’s appreciation means a lot to them.

“If you see a police officer say thank you, say hello. If anything, else, just say hello,” Orozco said.
