Incomplete cross-border tunnel found by CBP

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents and Mexican law enforcement discovered an incomplete illegal cross-border tunnel during a routine bi-national tunnel sweep Monday afternoon, according to US Customs and Border Protection.

CBP said the entry point was found submerged underwater along the international waterway channel constructed below both cities of Nogales.

The tunnel was also adjacent to the Port of Nogales, DeConcini Crossing and came to an abrupt stop underneath a parking lot in Nogales, Ariz.

CBP said the tunnel is approximately 50 feet in length and extended 44 feet into the United States. It is also two feet wide by two feet tall.

Within the tunnel, CBP said agents discovered structural support and digging tools, which indicate it was still in progress and incomplete.

Agents will continue to monitor and inspect the incomplete tunnel until it is appropriately secured and remediated with concrete filler, according to CBP.

Agents at Tucson Sector have continued to work closely with strategic partners in Mexico to detect tunnels under construction to prevent the movement of illegal contraband or persons across the border.
